Springsteen rocks Light of Day 11 in Asbury Park
An energized Bruce Springsteen held the stage for more than ninety minutes at the Light of Day benefit at the Paramount Theater in Asbury Park last night. The rocker, who is strongly associated with the Jersey shore town, aired songs from across his career, opening with acoustic versions of "Your Own Worst Enemy" from the recent "Magic" and the infrequently played "This Hard Land" before plugging in and tearing through favorites from "Nebraska," "Darkness on the Edge of Town," and "Born to Run."
Springsteen delighted the crowd with a soulful version of "Pink Cadillac," and pleased aficionados with a rendition of "One Way Street" from "The Promise," his 2010 boxed set.
Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers played the role of the E Street Band for the evening, and did it well. Grushecky, a legend in the Iron City (Springsteen joked that Pittsburgh and New Jersey had been separated at birth), developed a sound similar to that of the Boss, and Springsteen joined his friend for renditions of several Houserockers songs, including "I'm Not Sleeping," which the "Born in the U.S.A." singer co-wrote.
The Boss was by far the best-known singer to raise his voice for Light of Day last night, but he was by no means the only attraction at the Paramount. Gruschecky, Jesse Malin and the St. Marks Social, Joe D'Urso and Stone Caravan, Alejandro Escovedo, Garland Jeffreys, Willie Nile, and several acoustic acts played sets of their own earlier in the evening. The concert began at 6:30 p.m., and lasted until 1:30 on Sunday morning.
Though unannounced, the Springsteen performance at the annual Light of Day benefit came as no surprise: the Boss is practically a regular at the event. By the time he began his set at around midnight, the crowd at the Paramount knew what was coming. Springsteen had made his presence felt earlier in the evening, singing and strumming on Jesse Malin's "Broken Radio," and harmonizing with Willie Nile on "Heaven Help the Lonely." The Boss also joined Alejandro Escovedo for a passionate take on "Always a Friend."
Bruce Springsteen's performance threatened to end with an interminable group singalong on "Twist and Shout." Somehow, "Sopranos" actor Vincent Pastore got his hands on a microphone; as the Boss strummed, Big Pussy grumbled out a strange, incoherent version of "La Bamba." Perhaps realizing that the show couldn't finish like that, the Boss picked up his acoustic and led the crowd through "Thunder Road," sending everybody in the theater home happy. -

Bruce Springsteen "Darkness" documentary set for screenings, HBO

The roll-out for the 85-minute documentary on the making of Bruce Springsteen [ tickets ]'s "Darkness on the Edge of Town" is now set. It premieres at the 35th Toronto International Film Festival at a gala screening on Sept. 14, heads to HBO on Oct. 7 and then winds up in a "Darkness" box set that is penciled in for release before Christmas.
Titled "The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town," it was directed by Thom Zimny, who made the "Wings For Wheels" film for the "Born to Run" 30th anniversary box. Zimny won an editing Emmy in 2001 for HBO's "Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Live in New York City."
Footage for "The Promise" comes from 1976-1978 and includes home rehearsals and recording sessions.
The Toronto International Film Festival is one of the first festivals of the season -- September to May -- and often attracts stars and directors associated with films, opening speculation about the Boss making an appearance -

Package nearing completion, its documentary to premiere next month
Just announced this morning, the documentary that Thom Zimny has been working on for the impending Darkness box will premiere at the 35th Toronto International Film Festival as a Gala screening in September. Zimny created the Wings For Wheels doc for the Born to Run 30th Anniversary box; his new film is titled The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town.
Speaking to IndieWIRE, festival documentary programmer Thom Powers says that The Promise draws on "a treasure trove of footage from the 1970s. You see all the twists and turns of the making of this album. And we're the first people to announce that this film even existed... It's been in the works for a couple years now in total secrecy. And we’re very proud to be presenting it."
The description of the film from TIFF.net: "The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town takes us into the studio with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band for the recording of their fourth album. Grammy and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny has collaborated with Springsteen on this documentary, gaining access to never before seen footage shot between 1976-1978, capturing home rehearsals and recording sessions that allow us to see Springsteen's creative process at work."
TIFF runs from September 9 - 19. According to the festival website, a confirmed schedule will be posted August 24. Tickets are available now.
Update: A Shore Fire press release confirms that "Bruce Springsteen, Jon Landau Management, and Columbia Records are working on completing a new package related to Darkness on the Edge of Town, which will include the new Thom Zimny film The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town. Further details will be announced when they are finalized." The statement also gives the date for the TIFF premiere as September 14.
Toronto Star movie critic Peter Howell writes that "The pick of the The Promise as a Gala selection almost guarantees that Springsteen will come to Toronto to introduce it to the TIFF audience."
